Although optometry has an important ethical history, optometry and ophthalmology is indeed virgin territory for modern bioethics. Now that the Optometric Oath has been revised at Optometry's Meeting in Washington, D.C. 2017 it is important that the profession take ethics seriously as a true discipline. The AOA Ethics forum discusses real-world clinical optometric cases giving the optometrist important direction. This course will take a serious ethical look at the 10 major ethical issues facing Optometry.
- 1. Educate the attendees as to the history of ethics in Optometry. 2. Educate the attendees as to the important role of ethics in the future changes in the optometric profession. 3. Educate the attendees concerning basic concepts in applied bioethics, e.g. autonomy, paternalism, informed consent, and professionalism. 4. Present the Top Ten Ethical Issues in Eye Care. 5. Educate attendees as to the important role of ethics in practice management. 6. Educate attendees as to the important role of applied ethics in improving patient outcomes.
